Marfa Live Arts presented a screening of PRESENCE/ABSENCE IV by artist Stephanie Huang with live score by local artist Wilderman on Monday, October 30th, at 8pm in the Adobe Room at The Lumberyard in Marfa.

Huang’s presence/absence series is a meditation on land ownership’s implications in the United States - in particular, in West Texas, where most of the land is owned by 1% of the population. What drives Americans to desire and idealize an intensely private, non-urban existence? The second time-lapse film in the series, PRESENCE/ABSENCE IV, is a hybrid work that uses the act of camouflaging bathroom paraphernalia into ranch land to explore the extent to which land-owning Americans create laborious facades of public versus private identity and environmental stewardship, in addition to the construction of identity through image/media in contemporary society.
