6TH ANNUAL ONE-ACT PLAYS

Co-presented with Marfa Independent School District

This electrifying, standing room only night of theater was the culminating event to our weeklong 6th Annual Playwriting Workshop with the Marfa High School held in April. We presented four award-winning student one-act plays written by students with our 2017 playwright in residence Georgina Escobar.

Under Escobar’s tutelage, each student penned their own original one-act play. One winning play and one honorable mention were chosen from each grade and awarded prizes. The winning plays were presented to the public with actors from the community. Last year, nearly eighty plays were written during the writing workshop by students and submitted for consideration for final selection. Since the program launched in 2011, students have been written almost 500 plays.

As part of participating in the playwriting program, Escobar also served as a judge in reviewing the student written plays. One play from each grade was selected and winners were announced the next week. Playwriting classes are offered to the school at no cost and the public performance will be free and open to the community.

The annual Playwriting Workshop and One-Act Plays supports the Marfa Live Arts’ mission of bringing the performing arts to West Texas, educating the area’s youth, and bringing the community together. This program has become the cornerstone of Marfa Live Arts’ education program and exemplifies the mission of our organization.

“When students are given the creative tools to reach and expand, they end up searching deep within, finding their authentic voice, which is a powerful resource that can serve them all their lives,” says Marfa Live Arts' Director and the program's founder Jennie Lyn Hamilton, “I believe these artistic learning opportunities have a long-lasting impact on the overall educational and emotional development of these exceptional students.”

Playwriting classes are offered to the school at no cost and the public performance will be free and open to the community.

On May 1, listen to Marfa Public Radio for a West Texas Talk interview with winning student playwrights and Director Jennie Lyn Hamilton. Tune in live at 6:30pm (CST) at 93.5FM or streaming online.
