Please join Marfa Live Arts, One Mind Films and Project X Theatre on Saturday, April 2nd at the Crowley Theater at 7pm for a special preview screening of Maid.

In the 24-minute film, rising star Hayley Orrantia (ABC’s The Goldbergs) takes on the role of Joan of Arc in an adventure odyssey that was filmed in Marfa in December 2014. MAID also includes a dream sequence featuring students from Marfa Live Arts’ 2014 MISD Theater Class performing The Mission of Joan of Arc.

This is the first screenplay adaptation by visionary American playwright Erik Ehn, directed by his long-time theatrical collaborator Raphael Parry. The short script distills many of the unique qualities of Ehn’s work, blending a contemplative spirit with vibrant, lively poetry, and imagery. Erik and Raphael will both be in attendance at Saturday's screening.

In Maid, the Joan of Arc story is reimagined and transposed to the Texas border. Joan is a young chambermaid; she works in a small town hotel, keeping her head down to avoid the forces that urge her toward martyrdom. On one fateful day her enemies, her saints and the mysterious Marfa Lights all converge to chase her toward the fire that will complete her mythic destiny.

The production was filmed at locations all over Marfa including Hotel Paisano, the Courthouse, the Crowley Theater, the Tumble In RV Park, and area streets, alleys and highways. Featured local talent includes Harry Hudson, Willa Bamburg, Nalu Gruschkus and Primo Carrasco.

The Marfa Volunteer Fire Department also participated, supervising the filming of the burning —a long, cold night in which Orrantia gamely stayed tied to a stake for hours with temperatures dipping to a chilly 16 degrees! Who says acting is glamorous?
